Primary Lymphoedema is from birth and can start at any time as the result of an abnormally developed lymphatic system.
Secondary Lymphoedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system and can develop as a result of f.ex. surgery, radiation, injury/accident, immobility, infection, venous problems.
An approval letter from your Oncologist or medical team must be obtained if it is less than 5 years since diagnosis. After that a GP letter is necessary.
Lymphoedema cannot be cured, but through wearing of a compression garment, weight control, doing regular exercise and self-help MLD the swelling can often be reduced and managed. A few treatments a year with an MLD Ireland registered therapist specialising in lymphoedema are necessary to ensure you are managing your lymphoedema correctly and for any additional advice that may help you.
